Teaching English As A Foreign Language

วันอาทิตย์ที่ 11 เมษายน พ.ศ. 2553

My friend Sarah lives about three hours north of New York City, and is teaching English as a foreign language to four young women who work in a Chinese restaurant in the nearby town. They meet once a week, with the girls coming in to Sarah's living room with the delicious odors of shrimp and fried rice trailing them. Sarah finds that audio books are very helpful in this process, for hearing the same words and phrases repeated over and over plants the words very firmly in their minds. The four young women are all smiles and giggles, and sometimes Sarah thinks that her teaching English as a foreign language class is more a game to them. But after she hears that the two audio books she gave them were fought over by the four girls, she realized how serious they were about their studies. When Sarah visited the restaurant and listened, she realized that most of the conversation in the restaurant was not in English, for both the staff and the customers. Sarah was one of the few Americans in the place. The importance of hearing English daily through those audio books was very important, almost as much as her teaching English as a foreign language to them.

One aspect that she truly liked about the audio book was its agreement with her methods of teaching English as a foreign language. Sarah liked to begin with daily conversations, and emphasize the "give and take" of simple conversations. The audio book's structure had the same format, using simple conversations as a tool for correct word pronunciation. It pleased and astonished Sarah that the girls learned a true American sound very quickly, even before they realized the real meanings of the phrases. The first conversations that Sarah had taught were simple waitress phrases, but after the visit to the restaurant she decided that she preferred the audio book's emphasis on simple daily conversations. In addition, the girls got great fun out of "conversing" with each other, and "conversing" with the audio book, and dissolving into fits of giggles. Maybe the humor was a bit obscure, but teaching English as a second language was turning out to be great fun.

There certainly was a more serious side to this too. Employees of small Chinese restaurants like this who do not learn English simply remain as restaurant workers, and can get moved to other states as the need for employees in those places increases. Having someone teach English as a foreign language allows them to choose to remain in the area if they wish, and increases the girls chances of eventually choosing another career. Whether or not the girls thought about all of this, they did cherish their audio books of English conversation and pronunciation as true treasures. Teaching English as a second language had become an important part of Sarah's life and a very important foundation stone in the girls' lives. Their audio books would probably be a treasured memento for years, long past the time they were needed.

Presenting Yourself for the Job Interview

วันเสาร์ที่ 20 มีนาคม พ.ศ. 2553

A job interview can be an adventure. You have the opportunity to learn about new companies, new positions, and network with new people. The first step is to equalize the power. And that involves an attitude adjustment. The power should be 50-50. The interviewer is sizing you up AND you're sizing up the company. Don't give all the power to the interviewer. You decide if the company meets your criteria. Once you've balanced the power, here are some tips for presenting a positive image:

Prepare and rehearse. Anticipate difficult questions and prepare a strategy for answering them. Practice your answers out loud until you feel confident.

Know your message. What are your top three strengths, abilities and accomplishments? Know them cold and be able to back them up with examples.

Give a firm handshake. This is your first impression. A weak handshake creates a negative image, as does a bone crushing grip. A firm handshake combined with direct eye contact spells confidence. The handshake should not differ for men and women. Use the same confident and firm grasp.

Create chemistry. Make some small talk to break the ice. Then observe the interviewer and pace his or her energy. Does the interviewer like to get down to business? Then sit up and get to the point. Is he or she a storyteller? Then slow down and give more examples and vignettes. We like people who are most like us. A University or Michigan study determined that when hiring managers the formula was 60% chemistry and 40% skills.

Think and Pause. An interview is not a free association test. Think before you answer. Pause and wait for a response. Don't rattle on at breakneck speed. Speed talking is a sign of nervousness.

Be enthusiastic and upbeat. Nothing sells like enthusiasm. Managers value attitude over skills. Eagerness and a positive attitude can compensate for a lack of experience.

Ask questions. Job candidates who don't ask questions are perceived as disinterested. Preplan some questions. In the event that the interviewer is extremely thorough, ask an industry question. Don't lead with salary and benefit questions.

Listen. This skill more than any other is the key to your success. Listen with your eyes. What's the body language telling you? Listen with your ears. What do you hear in the tone and words? Listen with your heart. What do you hear between the lines? What is not being said? Clarify and paraphrase what the interviewer said before answering the question. (To improve your listening ask about the Listening Styles Profile and the Listen and Sell audio CD. MAILTO:diane@diresta.com)

Ask for the next step. Don't leave without knowing what's next. This is especially critical in sales jobs. The interviewer wants to see if you can ask for the order. If appropriate ask for the job. Express your interest and say, "Where do we go from here?" " What is the next step?" "When should I call you?"

Say thank you. Write a thank you note and mention something specific to each interviewer. Stay in touch. Follow-up may be the reason you finally land the job.

Audio Books On The Forefront Of Written Works

วันพุธที่ 17 มีนาคม พ.ศ. 2553

Over time, audio books have gained popularity as an addition or substitution to reading books silently to one's self. Literally what the name says: the spoken and recorded version of a written piece. An audio book is similar to the traditional practice of storytelling; thousands of years ago, stories were passed down orally. Over time, written skills developed and the oral tradition took a backseat to written works.

An audio book can be recorded in a variety of formats. For instance, cassettes, compact discs, and even MP3 versions are widely available. For obvious reasons, cassettes were popular for a time, but now that most people have moved on to CD players and iPods, the CD and MP3 audio books are more widely purchased and listened to. Interestingly, this is a very lucrative market, in that hundreds of millions of dollars are generated by the sale. CDs make up a huge portion of this market.

Seeing as how the market for audio books has obviously expanded, it is no common practice for authors an publishers to offer an audio book version simultaneous with the publishing and distribution of the written book. The reason for this increase in popularity is likely that many people are so incredibly pressed for time that being able to listen to a book in lieu of carving out time for quiet reading is much more attractive. Honestly, people have become so adept at multitasking that not doing at lest three things at once is almost unbearable. An audio book can be listened to anywhere, anytime, and in conjunction with the regular daily activities going on.

Add to that fact that the MP3 formats are available immediately and you satisfy another hallmark of twenty-first century culture: right-now gratification. Of course, downloadable books are mutually beneficial. The user is happy to get his book immediately, and the producer has sold something that cost very little to make. Since this type of book is only available online, there is no expense to record to a cassette or CD, no expense to store it, and no expense to pack and ship, either. Also, the online marketplace has a much broader potential customer base for audio books.

That is not to say, of course, that compact disc are going to fade away. Again, as recently as 2005, an audio book recorded on CD sold at a much higher rate than any other format available. Regardless of the format, though, the fact remains that listening to an audio book is a highly popular alternative, or addition to, reading the written book. Millions of people are using this format for their reading needs and wants, and since there are so many books recorded, the chances that the book you want being available as an audio book are pretty good. So whether you want to read along or just listen in, books on CD are a great acquisition to make.

Using Audio Programs to Increase Your Knowledge and Productivity

วันอังคารที่ 16 มีนาคม พ.ศ. 2553

If you do any significant amount of driving, a simple thing you can do to increase your productivity is to listen to audio programs in your car. If your commute time to work is 45 - 60 minutes each way, you can easily listen to at least 1 book each week. Over the course of a year, that can add up to about 50 books. That is a significant number.

But here are a couple of ways you can further increase the amount of audio you listen to. The primary tool you will need is an iPod or some comparable MP3 player.

1. With the iPod, if you are listening to an audio file in the m4b fomat (similar to an mp3 file and the format used by audible.com), you can increase the playback speed. The increase in speed is generally not noticable in terms of audio quality. But it allows you to listen to about an hour's worth of audio in only 45 minutes. If you listen to a lot of audio programs, that can add up to a lot.

For example, if you listen to only 9 hours of audio per week, you can actually cover 12 hours of content at the normal speed. Over the course of a year, that's an additional 156 hours. If you listen to more, the savings is even greater.

2. There are now text-to-speech programs that do an adequate job of creating an audio file that you can listen to on your iPod or other MP3 player. This opens up a lot of new possibilities. You can:

--Type up notes of books so you can focus only on the most important points (or have an assistant type up the notes for you).

--Listen to memos from work

--Convert books in the public domain (that are already in an electronic text file format)

The only limit is your imagination.

At my website, http://www.poweraffirmations.com, I have posted a few free audio files you may find helpful using text-to-speech software. One file is James Allen's classic work "As a Man Thinketh" (in the public domain). The second is an audio version of my free e-book on Power Affirmations.

How To Choose A Book To Read

วันศุกร์ที่ 12 มีนาคม พ.ศ. 2553

The first thing you have to decide is the type of book you would like to read. It does not matter whether you like to read fiction or romance or even accounting books. As long as you enjoy reading it, that is all right.

Once you have decided your genre, you can choose the book either by choosing a particular author, or maybe you could try out books written by unknown authors on that subject. You could try asking your friends or colleagues, who have similar taste, for their suggestions. You can then buy a few of these books, or you could get membership of a library. By joining a library, you can access many books without burning a hole in your pocket.

If you are in the bookshop and you want to buy a new book, but you do not have any idea as to which book to buy, then flip over the book to read about the contents, reviews, if any, and the author's details. That will give you an idea about the book. Since books are normally arranged by topics, you have a wide range to choose from.

Many book stores have in-house coffee shops where you could sit and browse through some pages of each book, before deciding on which one to buy. The internet is also a new and fun way to review books before buying them. Some sites like Amazon have a huge range of books to choose from and you can order them from home. You could also join a book club, where various like-minded people come together to read and discuss books.

A good book should keep you interested from the first word. It should awaken and activate your brain cells. If you are reading a suspense novel, then the element of suspense and surprise should be maintained throughout the book. It should shock you from time to time before ending in a thrilling and unexpected climax.

After reading the last word, you should have the satisfaction of having read a good book and regret of the book coming to an end. Similarly, a romantic book should pull at the strings of your heart. You should have tears in your eyes during the sad portions of the novel and warm, cuddly feelings during the romantic portions.

You also have to get into the right mood and atmosphere before reading. The area where you sit to read the book should be calm and peaceful with no distractions. The lighting should be bright enough for you to read clearly without straining your eyes.

So, go ahead, choose a good book and curl up in your favorite corner with a cup of coffee.
